What is Reiki?
A Basic Definition:
The word Reiki is Japanese. Pronounced "ray-key", as shown above, is derived from the
words “Rei” which means “universal, or cosmic”, and from the word “Ki” which is “life
force, or life energy”. Thus Reiki means literally Universal Life force. So,
what does that mean to you?
What is Reiki? and How do we describe it???
Briefly, it is a gentle hands-on technique that’s done with the clothing on. Reiki treats
the whole person including the body, emotions, mind and spirit. It stimulates the natural
ability of the body to self-correct and restore balance.
Most clients feel balanced, relaxed, and have feelings of a peaceful glow, security, and
well-being after a reiki treatment. It is a simple, natural, and totally safe session that
everyone can benefit from.
Reiki is a healing art that uses the life energy of Universe. Wow, that sounds a bit
hokey at first doesn’t it?!
I was rather skeptical too when I first heard that. How can something like that be
true??? Then I found out that it WORKS! That got me very interested.
Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui.
The ability to do Reiki is passed to others through a special process called an attunement.
Although Reiki is a profoundly powerful type of healing it is also very simple to learn. Even
children can do Reiki. Reiki is one type of healing that you can do on yourself too! Many
people learn Reiki to help their family and friends. Reiki can even be done on pets. The classes
I hold for level one take about 10 hours including hands on practice time.
Reiki is not a religion, nor is it connected to any particular belief. It can
be done by anyone of any denomination or belief. The healer does not use their own energy to
do Reiki, nor does the practitioner control the energy. The essence of Reiki is love.
The energy of Reiki will NEVER do harm. The healer is more like an extension cord plugged
into the energy by an attunement. The energy of Reiki is drawn through the attuned practioner
and goes to the intended receiver. It is healing to the practitioner to give as well as for the
one who receives the energy. There is no such thing as "too much Reiki".
Many people feel the energy of Reiki as warmth from the hands of the Reiki practitioner. It is
often described as comforting, nurturing and soothing. A Reiki session can heal on many
levels, although the practitioner cannot fortell what the healing will be. Some people have
"felt nothing" in the session, and shortly afterwards gone on to make major adjustments and
changes in their lives!
