What is Reflexology?
Do you stand on your feet a lot? Are you walking or working on hard floors all day?
Do you have to wear steel toed shoes or pretty shoes that crimp your toes?
Have you thought about trying reflexology? Have you heard of it and wondered what
it is? I want to encourage you to treat yourself to this really healthy relaxing
type of treatment.
Reflexology is a form of manual bodywork…that means, it does not use stones, or
other extra instruments…just the hands and fingers of the therapist. It is usually
done on the feet, but can also be done on hands and ears.
In theory there are specific spots on your feet that mirror all the bodies systems, internal
and external so that a treatment on just the feet (and ankles) actually affects and
treats the entire body.
There are several theories about how reflexology might work. No one is really certain. One
idea is called the zone theory. A doctor named William Fitzgerald discovered that the body
can be divided into vertical zones. There are 10 zones, five per side, one corresponding
to each finger and toe! By applying pressure with a clothespin in the zone corresponding to
the area he needed to work on the Doctor found that the pressure worked like an anesthetic,
greatly reduced pain without using drugs. He is considered the modern “father of reflexology”.
Another theory about how reflexology might work has to do with the same meridians that work in
acupuncture and other eastern medicine modalities. Most meridians begin or end in the feet. There
are also theories about electromagnetic vibration, and others about opening energy “gates” for
proper flow.
However it actually works, reflexology is a wonderful way to gain a deep level of full body
relaxation. Many people actually fall asleep during a reflexology session! Reflexology can relieve
pain and gives you a wonderful feeling of well being.
